Asda is a British success story, a giant supermarket chain which retails food, clothing, toys and general merchandise, famous for its slogan (Asda Price, Pocket the Difference) customers tap their trouser pocket twice. Asda also has its own mobile telephone network, Asda Mobile which is growing in popularity, and also Asda Pharmacy.
In this article I'm sharing a little bit of modern history about the founding and enormous growth of this British Empire of a retailer. Asda was founded in 1949 as Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Limited in Leeds. The name arose from the merger of the Asquith chain supermarkets and Associated Dairies.
Asda is an abbreviation of Asquith and Dairies With the then Asda stores mainly based in the North of England, the company expanded south by buying rival Gateway Superstores. The move nearly ended in disaster, finding it trying to sell too many products and running dangerously short of money and having to raise money from shareholders to have a chance of survival.
Very soon after Asda was given a new least of life under the careful leadership of Archie Norman, who later became a front bench Conservative MP. Archie Norman was chairman of the company from 1996 to 1999, basing the Asda business model on the successful American Wal-Mart Chain of supermarkets. Asda is known for its slogan "Asda price" where customers tap their trouser pocket twice, producing a clinking sound. The "Asda price" ads were launched in 1977 and have seen many celebrities starring in their campaign including Michael Owen, Julie Walters and Leonard Rossiter. Asda raised its profile even more when the then popular band The Spice Girls licensed their name and image to Asda and introduced Spice products for Christmas 1997 such as party supplies, official merchandise, and Spice Girl branded children's meals in the store restaurants.
One of the most recent marketing activities was the "rollback" campaign, with a smiley face bouncing from price to price, knocking them down like dominoes as customers watch, portraying Asda as the most affordable supermarket in the UK, a claim which was strongly contested by other leading supermarket chains. However it got the message across and only helped to maintain Asda's market share. More recently they've released Asda voucher codes and Asda discount codes to directly compete with other chains that already market in this way especially for online grocery shopping where customers can benefit from strong discounting off their weekly shop.
The most recent advertising campaign has been focused on price comparisons between Asda and its rivals, using information from online shopping comparison site MySupermarket suggesting that Asda is Britain's cheapest supermarket promoting Asda as the winner of Britain's lowest price supermarket award.
From 1990 to 1992, Asda sponsored Sheffield Wednesday F.C. during a strong successful period for the football club when they gained promotion from the Football League Second Division as League Cup winners and finished third in the old Football League First Division. Asda also sponsored Accrington Stanley during the 1998-1999 football season.
Asda also has its own successful, quality and affordable range of clothing marketed under the George label, which is also sold by Wal-Mart in the United States, Canada and Japan. The George label was named after George Davies, the founder of Next, and chief designer of the George label. In 1999 Asda was purchased by Wal-Mart for £6.7 billion taking out of British business ownership for the first time in its 50 year history. And in May 2010, it was announced that Asda would buy all of Netto's UK Operations in a £778 million deal.
